In times past the Southern Black Mouth Cur and the Yellow Ladner’s were predominantly bred and maintained in the south as a hunting and working cur dog. Folks understood what type of dog they were seeking and used them as their natural instincts were bred into them. Cur owners hunted bear and hogs and blood trailed deer, treeing coon or squirrels. They were very valuable as protectors for your livestock and herding. Protecting the homestead as well as your loved ones out in large wooded areas; if your young children went to the woods; the curs would follow them wherever they may roam; not only to protect them but also for the hunt .
Black mouth cur dogs love to explore and have an excellent sense of their territory. Today the popularity of the Original SBMC /yellow Ladner’s and Weatherford Ben dogs is tremendous. As is the misunderstanding and the misinformation of a well breed/hunting/working cur dog. Some breeders have joined with dog rescue sites for the purpose of profit and advertising; promoting good family dogs and trail walking dogs; or couch potato’s. These sites and articles don’t properly address concerns of who or what the the dog is actually desired for.
Black Mouth Cur Dogs are Protective and Need Proper Barriers
Owners would be well advised to have good security for pets and family with a well built fence and/or kennel. Barriers should be designed to try and keep your dog safe and your family out of any legal problems. A well built fence can serve to keep your BMC in a contained area as well as keeping folks out of your private property. Barrier fences also provide privacy for you and your pets.
A well bred SBMC will aggressively protect his territory and loved ones from predators of ANY kind at your property. Potential BMC owners that live in suburbs or high density city areas that are not hunters or homesteaders should consider rescue dogs; regardless of title. In any case the dog will need good boundaries both achieved with training and fencing. If you are interested in our dogs or the barriers discussed in this blog we have several good ideas for fences and/or kennels for well bred working and family dogs like the BMC.
