Black Mouth Cur Registries, Titles & Bloodlines

There are two types of registries however every registry is based on their own individual guidelines as well as the breeds they promote. Show breeds are purebred dogs that are bred for show. AKC (American kennel club) is one of these kind of registries. The focus will be placed on how well a dog shows while walking, sitting, trotting etc. For example if you are showing a dog like the Rottweiler, the focus is placed on his appearance and purity of lineage vs. his ability to guard.

The other type of registry is a performance based registry. Performance based registries have competitions in open field on live game or castings. They will also do night hunts on live game. Performance based registries also look at purity of lineage, colors, conformation and function of the dogs. The top performing dog in each category will be deemed a champion. For example “squirrel champion” will be reflected in the paperwork of the champion dogs lineage. Any dog will be registered with proof of lineage. There is all around focus placed on all aspects of the breed in this type of registry. They are generally located in the southern parts of the United States.

History and Titles of Black Mouth Cur Registries

NKC- est. 1964 Blaine Tennessee – They register a large list of working dogs, hounds and hunting dogs. NKC guidelines are based on performance, lineage, conformation and abilities. In reference to Southern BMC and the Ladner dogs, they only recognize two lines as follows:

  • Original Yellow Ladner Black Mouth Cur
  • Original Southern Black Mouth Curs

These are recognized as authentic BMC’s and maintained as functioning working dogs. The lines will recognize champions in their lineage and on their registered papers. On these papers you will find the titles as either “Southern Black Mouth Cur” or “Ladner Black Mouth Cur.” If the title paperwork does not state either of the previously mentioned names then the dog is recognized as “Black Mouth Cur.” A title of “Black Mouth Cur” designates a cross of two or three different cur dogs not in line with the recognized title lines of the registry. Proper title is one way to recognize that the cur dog you have is a pure line of 62.5% or more of one family. The “Black Mouth Cur” title will indicate a blended cur from two or three different BMC families. A cur with no title would generally be less expensive than a cur bred to original lineage like the SBMC or Ladner. Ultimately the price of the dog is at the discretion of the breeder. These titles are only for the dogs that follow their particular bloodlines and would ensure you of the pure blood curs.

The FBMCBO and the OBMCBO are registries built on the bloodline of a particular dog. The dogs name is “Weatherford’s Ben” and these registries are promoting the lineage of this dog. The foundation curs will only register dogs of this bloodline. Both organizations are the result of a split from the original FBMCBO owners. The foundation curs are well known cow dogs, working stock dogs and all around hunting dogs.

Southern Black Mouth Cur Registry

The Southern Black Mouth Cur registry is another example of a registry that was created for the promotion of one dog. The dog was Howard Carnathan’s “Bruno” and the association only promoted the Bruno lines. This dog has no relation to the Original Southern Black Mouth Cur. Although they share a similar name these dogs have a totally different bloodline. This particular registry has since been changed to BMCBO (Black Mouth Cur Breeders Organization. The active registry for the Bruno lineage is the Black Mouth Cur Breeders Association. The guidelines are different from NKC and have never been associated with one another. NKC has recently registered the Howard Carnathan dog and will simply read “Black Mouth Cur.” The title is recognized as a cross of two or more bloodlines of BMC not related with the southern black mouth curs. They will have distinct and separate standards as described on the NKC standard charts.

They are the only two lines of curs that are recognized by the NKC. Hello,
Love, love, love this breed. We adopted a BMC about a year ago and are BMC owners for life!! Wish I could post a pic of my boy Duke. He came from a kill shelter out if CA. He’s a handsome boy and I’ll be contacting you in the future so see about a pup to train while we still have Duke ❤️

To anyone who has interest in a BMC from Joel; We bought a male pup from Joel in January 2021, I can say our pup has been nothing short of perfect. I have had a few BMC, my 10 year old female is a Weatherford Ben/Ladner. Our pup (Reef) has great confirmation, his teeth, legs and feet are great, and his drive, and intelligence are beyond my expectations. He is a SOLID dog! It may sound unimportant or irrelevant, but you can not pass along great genetics if their base is not great to start with. I would caution folks, these dogs, are not city dogs, especially one of Joel’s dogs! I do not,,,,,,, encourage someone in an apartment, or a city dog park type of person to consider this breed, or someone who is used to a watered down type of dog. They are very high drive, protective and need space to run. Reef has a lot of grit and is very confident. Our pup has has picked up basic obedience like he already knew what I wanted, and shows a lot of heart with blood trailing and working with other dogs on cows. I will be trying for a female from Joel very soon!
