In order to understand the Original Southern Black Mouth Cur, we must review the standard that he was bred to and how he came to be. Only a thorough understanding of the breed itself will offer an accurate preview of what we are are committing to when we make a purchase. It is a possibility that all dogs go to heaven, but it is a fact that not all dogs are created equally. Even dogs with similarities in looks and colors can have distinct differences. Future Black Mouth Cur owners are encouraged to do research and perform their due diligence. For this purpose we offer a brief description of what you can expect from this “king of the woods”; the Original Southern Black Mouth Cur:
Standards of Yesteryear
The Original Southern Black Mouth Cur is a product of the Howard family of Washington county Alabama. it has been documented that the Howard line of dogs dates back to the 1800s. A dog was more of a necessity than an accessory back in those days; and Cur dogs were used by the Howard family and many others to settle the rugged American south.
The standards from times passed emphasized that a dog was bred to do ALL. He had to work cattle, herd sheep and run hogs. At night he would go hunt deer or tree bears and large cats. Night critters like possum and coons were also on the menu. In other words, the original dog had to be capable of feeding himself as well as the family. We are by no means talking about wild dogs but older times provided few options for supermarkets and 50 pound bags of dog food. There was no help for these dogs, and no patience for a dog that could not perform. Dogs that were unable to keep to the standard would be culled and discarded. The storied fame of the “king of the woods” came at a high price, with very strict guidelines.
The Original Southern Black Mouth Cur was and is a pure performance dog. We must have him perform in order to continue the same standard. J.D Howard believed that all dogs needed to be highly trained in order to reach maximum potential. In some cases and still to this day in places like Alabama; similar standards are still kept. On 1000+ acre properties you can still find many dogs running freely and feeding themselves. This may or may not be the healthiest approach to raising a dog; but it does guarantee that he will hunt and kill a variety of game. It also assures us that the true performers will never go hungry.
Black Mouth Cur Breeders vs. Bloodlines
There are many “breeders” of the Black Mouth Cur dog, but only a few actual “bloodlines”; such as the L.H. Ladner Black Mouth Cur or the J.D. Howard line of Black Mouth Curs. A true “bloodline” is created from a family of dogs bred to preserve and maintain certain desired traits and attributes. It is our goal to provide our owners with the best of what is being promised ; additionally we hope to clarify some common misconceptions often published about the original breed of our dogs. Careful attention must be paid to the many different registries and standards that exist today. There is only one “Original”, and while many claim to be, or come and go; only the truth will remain.
The Original Southern Black Mouth Cur Continued-
The Original Southern Black Mouth Cur dog was registered at a courthouse in Washington County, Alabama in 1940 by the Howard family. We call this particular dog the “Original” Southern BMC because it was documented prior to ANY other dog or registry even existing. The J.D. Howard BMC dog has a square block head and a square block nose producing a heavy jaw set and a more hound like appearance. Southern BMC dogs may vary in color from yellow to red but should not produce wide variations in any one litter. in our experience and to the best of our knowledge we have not seen a saddle back, brindled or black dog produced from a J.D. Howard Original Southern BMC line dog. The Southern Black Mouth Cur follows the NKC standards; and does not produce natural bob tails, or no tailed dogs.
The Carnathan Black Mouth Cur-
Original Southern Black Mouth Cur dogs and Carnathan Black Mouth Cur dogs are NOT one and the same. Creating a registry to promote one dog or to make a family of one dog is quite different than creating a family of dogs from the same genetics; same litter or litters. In actuality the Carnathan dog is a completely different breed of Black Mouth Cur dog which was produced by one dog and originally registered by Mr. Howard Carnathan as the SBMCBA. Carnathan’s “Bruno” was the life’s work of Mr. Howard Carnathan; he was created by breeding several distinct and different females. Some of these dogs are recorded outside of actual Cur bloodlines. Based on documented breedings of Carnathan dogs, it is not a surprise to us when we see a broad variation of BMC examples like the “striped” or “brindled” black mouth curs.
Ibarra’s Original Southern Black Mouth Cur Dogs
Ibarra’s primary breeding goal with our BMC’s is to maintain a full blown, hardcore hunting dog by his definition. The size, color, and inherent traits of our dogs must maintain the consistency of the old blood southern dogs. This is not a trail dog or a family dog FIRST, although these traits are promoted and desired. We encourage true grit and heart, with a desire to defend a family and homestead to the death if necessary. Anyone who has an intention to breed dogs or to set up a kennel should understand first and foremost the desired outcome of each breeding. For example : Buying a couple of yellow or brown dogs to come to a striped or spotted litter may not be a desired outcome or welcome surprise. We must look to the past in order to determine our future.
Pulling selected genes from related dogs will create a uniform line which in our opinion is the best approach for a consistent litter of puppies. We continue to maintain and breed only high level attributes to ensure that the highest quality and genetics are always contributed to the product that is being produced. Our primary product is a continual and true replication of the Original Southern Black Mouth Cur and its intentions. Fearless and truthful; loyal to his owner till the day he dies.

When we picked up our puppy we were very impressed with Ibarra BMC’s. Joel is very knowledgeable and the puppy is healthy and in great shape.
My husband is a professional hunter, mostly pig depredation and needs a dog like this. We’ve been looking for quite awhile to find a quality dog and this puppy is just that. She’s incredibly smart, a handful right now but we can already tell she’ll be perfect for pig work later. We will be getting another pup for sure.
Thanks Joel for your dedication and passion for breeding top of the line BMC’s.

I picked up my puppy about 11 am on monday Jan 6, 2020. Joel was a very friendly KNOWLEDGEABLE individual, he had my pup ready to go with papers gave me some great information on training my new pup and I got to meet some of Joel’s dogs. The Dogs were in very impressive condition, shows how well cared for and how well bred they are. The pup only 8 weeks old took a 2 hour drive back to the airport then went through the airport and flight as if He had done it for years. No whinining, just a few sassy growls saying Hey what is up and he was immediately quiet when asked, then another 3 hour drive to my home. He was introduced to my 2 dogs and took it just fine and he is doing well. The vet said at his exam what amazing body condition he is in, great mouth, great disposition she can hardly wait to watch him grow up. Thank you again Joel for being an Honest, credible breeder and an amazing person.

Our BMC from Joel is now 11 months old! I can’t remember how I slept at night before him. We live in bear & mountain lion country and this dog is fearless. He trees squirrels all day, chases raccoons and deer off, keeps people away from our fence, hunts rats and runs down any other critter he finds. He’s an incredible worker from sun up to sun down and at night loves nothing more than to curl up with our girls and cuddle. He is an extreme protector of our children and I’ve never trusted a dog as much as I trust him. I can’t say enough what a special dog this is.

We now have three of Joel’s BMC’s. Our first is a two and a half year old female named Dixie. Then there’s Bravo One, a two and a half year old male and we have a 5 month old female named Riata.
Joel’s description of these dogs is so accurate, it’s exactly how they are. His breeding is consistent and they are top quality dogs. They are so much alike is unreal but they each have their own unique personality. The first two are already becoming excellent dogs for hunting pigs. The young dog will soon be ready to ride along and start learning from the best. They are smart, talented and have an incredible instinct to hunt. They all started hunting around the yard and in our landscape when they were about three months old. I love that none of them are destructive, give them a bone or they’ll find a stick and be perfectly happy, it’s like they know not to chew up anything of ours. They aren’t just great hunting dogs they are part of our family.
Thanks again Joel, we love these dogs.❤

Working with this Breeder was exceptional. From start to finish, this team produced exactly what was discussed, hitting every expectation. The little puppy was even delivered to my door step with care and multiple daily texts en route. I could not speak higher of these folks. Highly trusted, highly reliable and I strongly encourage anyone looking for this type of breed to work with this breeder. A+++ all around
